À quel âge initier un enfant à la cuisine ?

At what age should a child be introduced to cooking?

During childhood, your child 's brain possesses incredible plasticity. Like modeling clay, it sculpts, reorganizes, and adapts easily in response to everyday experiences.

Introducing your child to cooking is therefore much more than passing on a recipe: it is laying the foundations for deep, lasting learning, and paving the way for autonomy.

Understanding brain plasticity and your child's development.

The early childhood period, between 1 and 6 years old, is marked by an extraordinary capacity of your child 's brain to absorb, test, and memorize new skills. Every gesture, every sensory exploration shapes their overall development: fine motor skills, language, curiosity, and self-confidence.

Introducing children to cooking at a very young age relies on this brain plasticity. Your child learns by imitating, manipulating, tasting, and observing. These experiences stimulate their sensory development, strengthen their hand-eye coordination, and foster their independence.

Identify the signs of independence in your child.

So, at what age should you start? There's no hard and fast rule, but some signs indicate that your child is ready to participate in cooking:

  • He expresses a desire to imitate adults (“I want to be like you!”).

  • He pays close attention to your movements and tries to reproduce them.

  • He manages to follow a simple instruction (“Place the fruit here”, “Mix gently”).

  • His fine motor skills are developing: he grasps small objects, uses a spoon without help, lines up cubes…

  • His curiosity explodes: he wants to touch, smell, taste, compare.

These signs often appear between 18 months and 3 years, and gradually become more refined until 6-9 years old. The important thing is to respect your child 's pace, encourage their initiatives, and offer activities adapted to each stage.

What activities should be offered depending on age?

  • Before age 2 : Observing, touching, transferring, washing a fruit, mixing with the hand… The emphasis is on sensory discovery and imitation.

  • From 2 to 3 years old : Your child can actively participate in simple tasks: breaking a banana, pouring an ingredient, mixing with a spoon. We begin to introduce the first educational tools, under close supervision.

  • From 3 to 5 years old : This is the ideal age to invite your child to use utensils designed for them.

Genius® products (Genius Cut®, Archi Autonomy Kit…) are designed for children aged 3 to 9: their ergonomics and safety allow your child to learn to cut, spread, peel safely.

At this age, you can suggest:

  • Cut soft fruits with a training knife.

  • Prepare some toast.

  • Assemble fruit skewers.

  • Wash vegetables, shell peas.

  • Weigh, transfer, fill molds.

Each task is an opportunity to learn, to gain autonomy and confidence.

  • From 6 to 9 years old : Your child takes more initiative, dares to try more complex recipes (cakes, salads, pizzas, etc.). They gain precision, assert themselves in their choices, and develop their creativity.

The Genius tools are always there for him: they evolve with him, from his first chopping to serving at the table. The most important thing? Let your child explore at his own pace, offer a variety of educational activities, and transform the kitchen into a place of discovery and shared enjoyment.

Accompany each step with kindness.
